So, you’ve finally decided to make the switch to LED bulbs. Well, good for you! It probably wasn’t a tough decision, given that you might have heard about the many benefits of these bulbs.

Now, before you make the necessary purchase of the LED bulbs and replace your old bulbs, there’s a few things you should know. LED bulbsWhile asking about either price or brand or even quality is commonplace, there are some questions, which are relevant regarding LED lights… so here they are:

1. “How much is the lumen efficiency?” lumen efficiency

Lumen - The lumen is a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a light source.

The higher the number of lumen, the brighter the light.

Lumen Efficacy -The amount of lumen emitted per wattage is called as lumen efficacy

E.g. – if a 9w LED bulb emits 900 lumens then its lumen efficacy is 900/9 = 100 lm/W.

Thus higher the lumen efficacy better will be the light output

2. “How wide/ narrow is the beam angle?” Beam angle LED bulbThe beam angle denotes how far the light will spread. Every LED bulb has a different beam angle. A narrow beam angle is known as a spot, while a wide beam angle  is known as a flood light. Higher the beam angle better is will be the light spread. A-beam angle of 120 degrees LEDs is comfortable for are perfect for the living room or the kitchen; while a higher beam angle of 220 degree or more is best suited for rooms with high ceilings (Kapil to check the same).

3.“What’s the power factor of these bulbs?” Power factor LED bulb

Power Factor is the effective ratio of real power (used power at load) to apparent power from your electric meter

For e.g. if 9watt LED light packaging label shows 0.95 power factor then it actually consume 8.55 watt for light output and 0.45W for its driver operations. In short, LED lights with power factor of 0.7 and above are considered to be high in performance.

Thus always go for the LED Light with higher power factor

LED bulbs do their bit in making sure that you receive enough light, while consuming lesser energy, thereby saving you more money on your electricity bills. While these points might have shined some useful insight about LED lights, you can make use of that knowledge when you’re purchasing any LED bulb.
