The Challenge

One of the cities of north western India wanted to have a smarter city infrastructure, which not only offers sustainable city amenities but also brings accountability in day-to-day functioning of such infrastructure. Being one of the popular tourist destinations in India, smarter city lighting was imperative for this city. One of the steps that the development authority took was to go ahead and install smart lighting to save energy and manpower as well as bring down the carbon footprint of the city. Though to achieve this mammoth task, there were many hurdles that needed to be overcome like:

  • Not having better and consistent lighting on the road
  • Not able to achieve high quality of lighting with minimum number of variations
  • Not able to manage and keep track of health and performance of street lights and luminaire
  • Too much power consumption
  • Frequent maintenance

The Solution

Bajaj Electricals along with CISCO provided a Smart Street Lighting solution that took care of all the concern areas of development authority. Various analyses were carried out and statistical reports submitted to validate the plans. The overall benefits projected were:

  • Energy saving up to 72%, and thereby reducing costs
  • Better maintenance and accountability, as it won’t require around the clock manual intervention
  • User friendly web application that can be managed and controlled easily
  • Keeping track on health and performance of luminaire by receiving first level of diagnosis, thus saving time, power consumption, wattage, current and life
  • Improving asset management
  • Offering better electrical infrastructure
  • Enhancing the aesthetics of the city to beautify it further

How We Did It

Bajaj team made complete tender based on the need and requirement of the city’s development authority and pitched along with CISCO for providing a Smart Street Lighting solution. A design-based solution for seven city roads was shared by the team.

The project deliverables set were:

  • Design and technology to develop and sustain such lighting solution
  • Product: 2200 units of 120 W BRTFG 120 W – EDGE

The technology provided was motion/movement controlled wherein, street lights are dimmed during off-peak hours to minimum acceptable level as per the reduced traffic conditions at night. Such street lights are equipped with intelligent motion sensor, which brightens up the set of 6 - 7 (30 mts) street light poles ahead of vehicle as per the motion of vehicle along that road to provide appropriate light for that time period. Then the street lights shall go to its optimum light level once the vehicle has passed that location/level. In simple words, the lights will brighten when there is movement and dim when there is none. This method ensures providing light as and when required and optimizing the power consumption to the maximum.

Moreover, the technology also allows the authority to have a planned or scheduled dimming cycle via a web application. And, in case of any fault, the smart luminaire shall trigger alert with first level of diagnosis. Thus the conventional kind of public lighting system was upgraded to the level of intelligent lighting.

So, the Bajaj Electricals team overcame every constraint to install smart lighting solution in the city. This move not only retained the aesthetic beauty of the city but also ensured energy efficiency and better illumination.
