Missing or faulty earthing in the socket

Earthing is what turns a fault into a tripped MCB instead of a shock. When it works, the leaked current runs safely to earth and the supply cuts out. What it does not guarantee is ongoing safety. Certification applies to the product as manufactured. It says nothing about a rod that has been dropped, stored damp for six months, run dry once, or used with a frayed cord. It also says nothing about your socket, which is outside the appliance entirely.

Uncertified rods are common in the low-price segment and are the category where insulation failures cluster. If you are replacing a rod, the ISI mark is the first filter, not the last one.

Is It Safe to Touch the Water While the Rod Is On?

No. Never touch the water, the bucket or the rod while the appliance is switched on, regardless of how new it is or whether it is marked shockproof.

An immersion rod is a supervised appliance. In some households, the supervision it needs is not realistic, and a fixed water heater is the safer answer even though it costs more upfront.

Households with young children

An open bucket of near-boiling water at floor level is a scalding risk before electricity enters the discussion. Children reach into buckets, pull cords, and knock things over. If a rod is unavoidable, it should be used in a locked or closed bathroom with an adult present for the entire cycle, and the bucket should be emptied or moved as soon as heating finishes.

The same reasoning applies to elderly household members who may have reduced grip strength or balance, and to anyone who cannot reliably remember the switch-off-before-touching rule.

Areas with unstable voltage or no earthing

If the sockets in your home are not earthed and rewiring is not an option, an immersion rod removes your only protective layer against a fault. Persistent voltage fluctuation is a separate problem: it stresses the element, accelerates insulation degradation, and shortens the life of the appliance.

In both situations, the practical answer is either a fixed water heater installed by a technician on a properly earthed circuit, or resolving the wiring problem first. Neither is an appealing answer, but a rod does not become safer by being the more convenient option.

What to Do If Someone Gets a Shock

  1. Do not touch the person while they are still in contact with the source. You will become part of the same circuit.
  2. Cut the power first. Switch off at the socket if you can reach it safely with a dry hand, otherwise trip the main MCB at the distribution board.
  3. Separate the person from the source only after the power is off, using a dry non-conductive object such as a wooden stick if any contact remains.
  4. Get medical help immediately, even if they seem fine. Electrical injury can affect heart rhythm with delayed onset, and burns can be deeper than they look.
